WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) took to the House Floor to oppose House Republicans’ Politics Over Parents Act. Below is a transcript of her remarks: 

“I am the proud mom of three. Altogether, I have 36 cumulative school years under my belt. And I served on a school board for 6 of those, fighting for parents and for kids. So, I speak from experience when I call on this Chamber to oppose the GOP’s Politics Over Parents Act.

“Thank you Mr. Speaker.

"When President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act , he told those gathered at the White House, ‘I’m signing this reform bill into law on behalf of my mother, who argued with insurance companies even as she battled cancer in her final days.’

They described her as a maverick, pioneer, feminist champion, trailblazer, fearlessly independent politician, and an icon and role model for many elected officials, men and women alike. We agree—but for the feminist movement, Pat Schroeder was much more. She was a member of Congress not just for the people in Denver, but for feminists across the United States.

“Two years after the horrific spa shootings in Atlanta, the vile rise in anti-Asian hate crimes continues to spur fear, anger, and grief in the Asian American community. In remembrance of the innocent lives stolen, we must continue to eradicate bigotry and violence in all forms.
