WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the shooting at Chabad of Poway Synagogue in San Diego, California:

“I was deeply unnerved to hear about today’s synagogue shooting in San Diego. Six months to the day since the deadly, anti-Semitic attack on the Tree of Life congregation in Pittsburgh, this shooting reminds us that hateful rhetoric leads to violence.  I pray for the family of the individual who was killed today, and I thank the courageous police and E.M.S. personnel who responded and worked to save lives. No one should have to live in fear of being shot in their places of worship, their community’s streets, their schools, or any other public place in our country.  We must do more to prevent violence fueled by hate, particularly against the Jewish community in our country, which has seen a dangerous rise in anti-Semitism.”
